Statuette Baule - Côte d'ivoire
This « Bloblo bian » statuette represents a spiritual spouse in the Baule tribe. The delicate features reflect an ideal of masculine perfection. The rounded curves are graceful. The belly and the back of the statuette present detailed scarifications, while two cheloids adorn the neck and temples on the face. The beard is very elaborated and extends in three parts as a sign of sovereignty and authority. The sculpture distinguishes itself by a very elaborated headdress with buns and braids extending on the neck.
The extreme refinement of the statuette is particularly seen in the representation of the nails on the finely carved hands and especially on the thumbs as well as on the detailing of the detached feet.
The arms are along the body and are joined at the navel. The inner expression gives the statuette a very hieratic expression while the position of the hand emphasis on the importance of the lineage in the Baule culture.
The eyelids are adorned with kaolin and the beautiful patina testifies of its offerings it received in ritual use and great age.
