Statuette Baule - Côte d'ivoire
This Baule statue represents a monkey with human shapes, known as « Beggar monkey » or « Bekre». Among the Baule, as in many African tribes, monkeys are sacralised and invoked during initiation rituals. They would also intervene in divination rituals, would be a powerful protection against sorcerers or would be a protective deity of agrarian rites.
This statuetteis asking for offerings. It distinguishes itself by the quality of the sculpture. The carving of details is particularly ingenious, especially regarding the execution of the hands and feet. The open prognathic mouth and the eyes give the face a very strong expression.
The patina of the scultpure testifies to its ritual use and its age.
