Serrure Dogon - MALI
This dogon lock presents on its top a highly stylized couple with the characteristic features of the ethnic group. The Dogons give indeed a preponderous importance to the primordial mythical couple that engendered twins. According to Marcel Griaule in Dieu d’eau, that transcribed the myth he heard from Ogotemmeli, a wise blind Dogon, Amma would have created the Earth to which he is united, giving birth to twins. It is probably the latter who are represented at the top of this lock.
The wooden locks were fixed on the doors of the granaries or to those protecting the jewelry and other chief’s treasures. The protection was more symbolic than effective: the wooden doors and locks were adorned with the founding myths and other attributes of the Dogon cosmogony which aimed at repelling any thieves.
The beautiful patina of the object testifies to its use and great age.
