Senufo Mask - Ivory Coast
This anthropozoomorphic Senufo mask has partly the look of a « kpelye » mask, wearing ornaments around its face. It also represents an animal, with its two huge rounded horns, and two smaller geometrical ones on the top of its forehead. Two little cameleons are symetrically placed on the horns, and two birds seem to fly above the head of the mask, attached with metallic wire. The face looks serene, the eyes are half closed and the mouth is missing under a long nose adorned with metal. Some metallic stripes are also located on the horns and parts of the face. The deep black patina of the mask attests of its ritual use and great age.
