Masque Gouro - Côte d'ivoire
This Guro/Senufo mask is called Kpelie in the vernacular language. Many Senufo masks belong to the Poro male society, an age-structured organization that exercises political and social control, transmits traditional knowledge and performs religious functions. During the funeral ceremonies, Kpeliye'e anthropomorphic masks are supposed to drive from the house of the deceased his spirit.
This Anthropo-zoomorphic mask is composed of a human face topped with horns falling on each side. Geometric ornaments surround the mask and give a balance that enhances the overall serenity of this mask.
The dark patina enhances the overall expression of the mask and the ritual scarification it is wearing close of the mouth.
